Architectural vs 3-Tab Shingles: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

By the Roofers Greenville Editorial Team · Last reviewed: October 2026

Architectural shingles cost about $1 more per sq ft than 3-tab ($4–$6 against $3–$5 installed nationally) and last longer: 20–30 years against 15–20, according to HomeGuide. They also carry higher wind ratings; in one manufacturer’s line, 130 mph against 60 mph. For most Greenville re-roofs, architectural is the default. See roof replacement in Greenville.

In this guide:

What’s the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?

3-tab shingles are a single flat layer cut into three equal tabs, so the roof looks uniform and flat. Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminated) bond two or more layers together, which makes them thicker and gives the roof a shadowed, textured look.

How much more do architectural shingles cost?

About $1 per sq ft at the midpoint of HomeGuide’s ranges. On a 2,000 sq ft roof surface, that’s roughly $2,000 more. Because architectural shingles last around 5–10 years longer, the cost per year of roof life is similar or lower.

Which holds up better in wind?

Architectural shingles, in the product lines we checked. Owens Corning rates its Supreme 3-tab shingle for a 60 mph wind warranty and its TruDefinition Duration architectural shingle for 130 mph. Wind ratings depend on the exact product and on installing it to the manufacturer’s nailing pattern, so ask for the data sheet of the shingle you’re quoted.

Wind is a regular roofing problem in Greenville County: NOAA records 124 damaging thunderstorm-wind reports there from 2016 to June 2026 (NOAA Storm Events).

Are 3-tab shingles still available?

Yes; Owens Corning still sells its Supreme 3-tab line, for example. But many roofers quote architectural shingles by default, and some 3-tab colors can be harder to match for repairs. If you’re repairing an existing 3-tab roof, ask the roofer how closely they can match it.

When does 3-tab still make sense?

  • A rental or a house you’ll sell soon, where the lowest upfront cost matters most.
  • Outbuildings, sheds and garages.
  • Matching an existing 3-tab roof section.

What about algae-resistant shingles?

Many architectural lines include algae resistance, which matters in the humid Upstate where black streaks are common. Owens Corning’s Duration data sheet, for example, lists a 10-year algae-resistance period. What causes streaks, and how to clean them, is in black streaks on your roof.
