New seamless aluminum gutters typically cost $10–$20 per linear foot installed, and most homes need 100–200 feet, so a whole house runs about $2,200–$5,000, using national 2026 figures from HomeGuide. Installation is usually a one-day job. The first decisions are 5-inch or 6-inch gutters, and whether to add gutter guards.

What do new gutters cost?
Material, length and extras decide the price. These are national installed figures; a Greenville quote depends on the house’s height, corners and downspouts.
| Gutter material | Installed cost per linear foot | Typical lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | $10–$20 | 20–30 years |
| Vinyl / PVC | $8–$12 | 10–20 years |
| Steel | $10–$35 | 20–50 years |
| Copper | $25–$40+ | 50–100 years |
| Zinc | $35–$45 | 30–80+ years |
| Extra | Typical national cost |
|---|---|
| Seamless instead of sectional | +$3–$5 or more per linear foot |
| 6-inch instead of 5-inch | +$1–$2 per linear foot |
| Downspouts | $30–$75 each, installed |
| Gutter guards | $15–$45 per linear foot, installed |
| Old gutter removal | $50–$200 |
| Fascia board replacement | $5–$12 per linear foot |
As a rough guide, HomeGuide puts a typical home’s gutter run at about one-tenth of its square footage: about 180 feet for a 2,000 sq ft house, or roughly $2,200–$4,500.
Seamless or sectional gutters?
Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil into one piece per run, with joints only at corners and downspouts. Sectional gutters are joined every 10 feet or so, and every joint is a place to leak. Seamless costs a little more per foot, and is the usual choice for aluminum.
Do you need 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
It depends on how much water each run carries. Three things drive it: the roof area draining into that gutter, the roof’s pitch (steeper roofs shed water faster) and how hard it rains. Upstate summer thunderstorms bring short, heavy downpours, which is when undersized gutters overflow.
- Large or steep roof sections, long runs and valleys that dump into one corner are the usual reasons to step up to 6-inch gutters and larger downspouts.
- Ask the installer how they sized your gutters and downspouts, and to show the roof area per run.
- More or larger downspouts often fix overflow more cheaply than bigger gutters.
Which gutter material should you choose?
- Aluminum: the standard choice: rust-proof, light and available in many colors.
- Steel: stronger against ladders and falling limbs; it needs its coating intact to avoid rust.
- Copper: the longest-lasting and most expensive, often used on historic or high-end homes; it develops a green patina.
- Half-round: a rounded profile used on older and traditional homes, in aluminum or copper.
- Vinyl: the cheapest, with the shortest life.
Are gutter guards worth it?
Guards cut down on cleaning; none of them make gutters maintenance-free. The three main types behave differently under Upstate trees:
- Screens: cheapest; they stop leaves but let pine needles and seed pods through or get stuck in them.
- Micro-mesh: fine stainless mesh that stops pine needles and most debris; the top surface still needs occasional brushing.
- Reverse-curve (surface tension): water follows the curve into the gutter while leaves slide off; heavy downpours can overshoot them.
Installed guards run $15–$45 per linear foot nationally (HomeGuide). Under pine trees, ask specifically how the guard handles needles.
What gutter repairs are common?
- Sagging gutters: usually loose or failed hangers, or rotten fascia behind them.
- Leaking seams and corners: resealing the miter or end cap.
- Pulled hangers: refastening into solid wood with new hidden hangers.
- Overflow: clogged downspouts, too few downspouts or gutters sloped the wrong way.
Rotten fascia or soffit behind the gutters is a roofing repair as well; see roof repair.
Should you replace gutters with a new roof?
Often, yes. Gutters usually come off or get damaged during a re-roof, and replacing them together means the drip edge and gutters are fitted to each other. Ask whether one crew handles both, or how two crews will coordinate. See roof replacement.
What should a gutter installation include?
- Seamless runs, with the gutter size and material named in the quote.
- Hidden hangers spaced as the gutter manufacturer specifies; ask for the spacing in writing.
- A steady slope toward each downspout, so water doesn’t sit in the gutter.
- Downspouts sized for the run, with extensions carrying water away from the foundation.
- Sealed end caps and corner miters.
- Repair or replacement of rotten fascia before the new gutters go up.
- Removal and haul-away of the old gutters.

Frequently asked questions
How long do aluminum gutters last?
HomeGuide’s material table puts aluminum gutters at 20–30 years. Fasteners, sealant at the corners and the fascia behind them usually need attention before the gutter itself wears out.
Do I need 6-inch gutters?
Not always. Six-inch gutters make sense for large or steep roof sections and long runs, where 5-inch gutters overflow in heavy rain. Adding or enlarging downspouts can be enough. Ask the installer to explain how they sized each run.
Are gutter guards worth it under pine and oak trees?
They can be, if you choose the right type. Micro-mesh guards stop pine needles and oak debris better than basic screens, though their surface still needs occasional brushing. Expect $15–$45 per linear foot installed nationally.
Should gutters be replaced with a new roof?
Often, yes, especially if they’re old or damaged during tear-off. Doing both together lets the drip edge and gutters be fitted to each other, and avoids paying for removal twice.
How many downspouts does a house need?
It depends on the roof area each gutter drains and the downspout size. Long runs and large roof sections need more. Ask the installer to show how many square feet each downspout serves.
